In ancient Persia the rulers believed the earth itself rested on a giant sapphire whose reflection colored the sky blue, making the stone and the heavens one continuous and inseparable thing. In ancient Hebrew tradition the tablets on which the Ten Commandments were written are described in the Talmud as being made of sapphire, making it the literal material of divine law, and the throne of God is described in Exodus as being paved with it. The British Crown Jewels contain sapphires that have been part of the royal collection for centuries, believed to carry the accumulated wisdom and protection of every monarch who has worn them. In ancient Egypt sapphire was associated with Nut, the sky goddess who arched her body across the heavens each night to swallow the stars and give birth to the sun each morning, connecting the stone directly to the idea that the sky and the sapphire are made of the same eternal material. In ancient Buddhist tradition sapphire was called the stone of stones and was believed to bring spiritual enlightenment, inner peace, and the devotion that carries a person all the way through to liberation. In West African Yoruba tradition sapphire’s deep celestial blue connects it to Yemoja, the orisha of the ocean, motherhood, and the vast deep feminine waters that hold all life before it is born, the mother of all waters and all the children who come from them.

Every civilization that looked at this stone looked up at the same time, because sapphire has always belonged to the sky.
