Mefkat — Turquoise Swing Hoop Earrings

There is a woman who carries joy the way the sky carries light, completely and without effort, and Mefkat was made for her.

Turquoise is one of the oldest stones worked by human hands, with archaeological evidence documenting its mining in the Sinai Peninsula more than six thousand years ago, making it among the most ancient continuously worked stones in human history.

The ancient Egyptians called it mefkat, meaning joy and delight, and it was among the most beloved and widely used stones in the entire culture. Hathor, the goddess of love, beauty, music, and feminine joy, was called the Lady of Turquoise, and turquoise was offered at her temples and worn in her honor by Egyptian women across every level of society for thousands of years, confirmed by archaeological evidence from multiple sites across Egypt. The funeral mask of Tutankhamun is inlaid with turquoise alongside lapis lazuli and carnelian, placing it at the threshold between the human and the divine.

In ancient Persia turquoise was the national stone, documented in Persian historical and court records for more than two thousand years, used to dome the great mosques and palaces of the Persian empire because its blue-green color was believed to represent heaven and the protection of the divine. Persian warriors decorated their horses and weapons with turquoise believing it protected both rider and animal in battle.

In ancient Mesoamerica turquoise was among the most valued materials in the Aztec empire, used exclusively in the most sacred ceremonial contexts and in extraordinary mosaic works documented in Mesoamerican archaeological scholarship, including the famous turquoise serpent mosaic mask that stands as one of the most significant ceremonial objects from the ancient world.

For the Navajo, Diné people, turquoise is called Doo tł’izh and is documented in Navajo oral tradition and ceremonial teaching as one of the four sacred stones that hold up the four corners of the sky in Navajo cosmology, worn in ceremony, used in prayer, and given as one of the most significant gifts a person can offer.

For the Pueblo peoples including the Zuni and Hopi, turquoise has been central to ceremonial life and sacred practice for more than two thousand years, confirmed by extensive archaeological evidence from sites across the American Southwest including Chaco Canyon.

In ancient China turquoise is documented in archaeological finds from multiple dynastic periods in ceremonial objects and burial goods, associated with heaven, protection, and the vital forces of the natural world.

Every civilization that looked at this stone saw the same sky, and understood that wearing it was a way of carrying heaven close to the body.

Each Mefkat hoop is individually wire-wrapped and hand-hammered in your choice of sterling silver, brass, or copper, making every piece a one-of-a-kind wearable talisman. Turquoise carries a color unlike almost any other stone on earth, a blue-green that shifts between the sky at noon and the sea at its clearest, alive and luminous and impossible to look away from.

Mefkat was made for the woman who has decided that joy is not something she has to earn but something she was born carrying.

Wear them when you need to remember that the sky has always been on your side.
