Amethyst has been revered across thousands of years and every corner of the world as a stone of protection and clarity. The connection between amethyst and the Greek word "amethystos," meaning not intoxicated, is documented in ancient Greek lapidary tradition and in the writings of ancient scholars who described the stone as a guardian against losing oneself to excess. This idea of amethyst as a protector of the clear and sovereign mind carried forward into every culture that encountered it.
Tibetan Buddhist tradition documents the use of amethyst in prayer beads as a tool for meditation and the quieting of the mind, a practice that continues to this day and is documented in Buddhist religious scholarship.
In medieval Europe amethyst was documented in lapidary texts including those of Hildegard of Bingen and Albertus Magnus as a stone of protection, mental clarity, and the guarding of the spirit against forces that pull a person away from their center.
