The ancient Egyptians mined peridot almost exclusively on the remote volcanic island of Zabargad in the Red Sea, a location so strategically important that armed soldiers were documented as guarding it and its location was kept secret for centuries, all confirmed in Egyptological scholarship.
The ancient Romans called peridot the evening emerald, documented in ancient lapidary texts, because unlike any other green stone it did not darken at night but continued to glow with its own warm light under lamplight, a stone whose light simply could not be put out.
Cleopatra's legendary emerald collection is now believed by Egyptologists including Joann Fletcher to have actually been peridot, making it one of the most consequential cases of mistaken identity in the history of jewelry.
In Hawaiian oral tradition, documented in Native Hawaiian cultural scholarship, peridot crystals found in the hardened lava flows of the Big Island are understood as carrying the creative fire of the volcanic forces that formed the islands, connecting the stone to the most primal generative power in Hawaiian cosmology.
