Ruby is called Ratnaraj in ancient Sanskrit, meaning the king of all precious stones, and no gemstone in human history has been more consistently associated with sovereign power, invincible life force, and the passionate fire at the center of everything worth living for. In ancient India Hindu, texts described ruby as a drop of the blood of Mother Earth herself crystallized into the most concentrated form of life force energy in existence. Warriors rubbed ruby into their skin before battle believing it made them invincible, and the ancient Sanskrit texts describe it as a stone so charged with power that it could boil water simply by being held near it. In ancient Burma, which produced the world's most prized rubies for centuries, warriors inserted rubies into their flesh before battle believing the stone made them impossible to wound, and the Burmese called it the stone of the sun, carrying the concentrated power of the sun inside it. In ancient China ruby was placed beneath the foundations of important buildings to bring protection and fortune to everyone inside them, and Chinese noblewomen wore it as a symbol of the kind of life force that commands respect without asking for it. The ancient Greeks called it anthrax, meaning burning coal, because of the way it glowed from within as though it contained its own internal flame. Roman noblewomen wore it as a symbol of passionate love and the vitality that makes life worth living. Medieval European royalty wore ruby as a stone of sovereignty and divine right, and medieval physicians believed it could purify the blood, counteract poison, and restore the body's vital fire. In the Bible ruby appears as one of the twelve stones in the breastplate of the High Priest of Israel, connecting it to divine communication and sacred discernment, and the book of Proverbs uses it as the benchmark of the highest possible human value, stating that a woman of noble character is worth more than rubies.
Every civilization that encountered this stone recognized the same truth inside it: some women are simply made of fire, and no force on earth can put them out.
