Black agate is one of the oldest and most universally trusted protective stones in human history, and its stories reach back to the very foundations of civilization. In ancient Mesopotamia black agate was carved into amulets and cylinder seals worn on the body and placed in homes and temples to ward off evil, illness, and the unseen forces that ancient people understood as real and present dangers. Babylonian priests used it in divination rituals believing its depth of color opened a channel to hidden knowledge and allowed the seer to perceive what was not immediately visible. In ancient Egypt black agate was associated with Set, the god of storms, chaos, and the necessary darkness that balances the light, and Egyptian warriors wore it believing it gave them sovereign power over chaos, the ability to stand in the storm without being consumed by it. In ancient Greece and Rome soldiers, sailors, and travelers carried black agate as a powerful talisman against accidents, danger, and the malevolent intentions of others, and Roman soldiers wore it engraved with the image of Mars believing it made them invincible on the long journeys between campaigns. Across ancient Persia and the Arab world black agate was engraved with prayers and divine names and worn as a direct shield against the evil eye and the kind of psychic interference that ancient cultures understood as a genuine threat to health and wellbeing. In Native American traditions black stones were associated with the fertile void before creation, the place of potential from which all new things emerge, and black agate was used in grounding rituals to help people return to themselves after experiences that had pulled them far from their center.
