In ancient Mesopotamia it was considered more valuable than gold, used exclusively in sacred objects and the eyes of deity statues because the Sumerians believed it carried the soul of the gods inside it. To wear lapis was to carry divine presence on your body. The ancient Egyptians called it the stone that contains the night sky and associated it with Ma’at, the goddess of truth, justice, and cosmic order. Pharaohs ground it into powder believing it opened divine vision and connected them to the heavens. Tutankhamun’s burial mask is inlaid with lapis lazuli, placing it at the threshold between the human and the divine. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest written story in human history, the gates of paradise itself are described as being made of lapis lazuli. Renaissance painters ground it into ultramarine, the most expensive pigment in existence, used for centuries exclusively to paint the robes of the sacred feminine. In Buddhist tradition it is one of the seven precious substances, directly connected to the Medicine Buddha and the kind of truth that heals and liberates.
