Peridot is one of the oldest and most fiercely mythologized stones in the ancient world, and its origin stories are as extraordinary as the stone itself. The ancient Egyptians called it the gem of the sun and mined it almost exclusively on the remote volcanic island of Zabargad in the Red Sea, a location so sacred and strategically guarded that armed soldiers protected its location for centuries. Egyptian priests believed peridot was formed from the tears of Sekhmet, the sun goddess, as she breathed fire across the earth. Cleopatra's legendary emerald collection is now believed by many historians to have actually been peridot, making it one of the most consequential cases of mistaken identity in the history of jewelry. The ancient Romans called it the evening emerald because unlike any other green stone it did not darken at night but continued to glow with its own warm light under lamplight, a stone whose light simply could not be put out. In Hawaiian tradition peridot is considered the tears of Pele, the goddess of volcanoes and creation, because peridot crystals are found in the hardened lava flows of the Big Island, making this stone literally the crystallized remains of divine creative fire. Across the ancient Middle East and medieval Arab world it was worn as a talisman against evil spirits and nightmares, set in gold and kept close to the body to protect the wearer from the darkness of the night. Medieval Europeans called it the stone of compassion and used it to heal relationships, open the heart to forgiveness, and release old patterns of anger that kept people from moving forward into the life they deserved.
