Pink tourmaline carries one of the most extraordinary origin stories in the gemstone world. According to ancient Egyptian tradition, tourmaline made its long journey from the center of the earth up toward the sun, and along the way it passed through a rainbow, absorbing every color the rainbow contained. This is why tourmaline occurs in more colors than almost any other stone on earth, and pink tourmaline was the color of the heart's frequency within that rainbow, the specific vibration of love, compassion, and emotional wholeness. In ancient India it was used in ceremonies to awaken the capacity for self-love in people who had forgotten their own worth, and Hindu tradition connected it directly to Anahata, the heart chakra, the energetic center of love, grief, forgiveness, and the courage it takes to remain open after being hurt. In medieval Europe pink and red tourmalines were called the stones of the troubadours, the traveling poets and musicians who wrote and sang about courtly love and the ennobling power of genuine feeling, and wearing it was associated with the ability to express love beautifully and be received with equal tenderness. In shamanic traditions across Central and South America the stone was used in protective rituals specifically for women, believed to shield the emotional body from harm and keep the heart safe enough to remain open. Renaissance physicians and natural philosophers wrote about pink tourmaline as a stone that soothed the nervous system, quieted grief, and restored the emotional body after loss, making it one of the earliest recorded uses of a crystal in what we would now call emotional healing.
