Red jade is one of the most ancient and mythologically sovereign stones on earth, and its stories reach back to the very foundations of human civilization. In ancient China, jade was not simply a gemstone but the most sacred material in existence, more valued than gold, more revered than iron, and believed to be the crystallized essence of yang energy, the active vital fire that animates all living things. Red jade specifically was associated with the fire element, with the life force itself, and with the blood of dragons, the most powerful and auspicious creatures in Chinese cosmology. Emperors were buried in jade suits because it was believed to preserve the soul and guarantee passage into the next world. Warriors carried red jade into battle as a talisman of courage, ferocity, and invincibility, believing it made them impossible to defeat. In ancient Mesoamerica the Maya and Aztec considered jade more sacred than gold and used it exclusively in royal and ritual contexts. The Maya associated red jade with the heart, with the life force that flows through all living things, and placed jade masks over the faces of rulers at death to protect the soul on its journey. Mesoamerican shamans wore jade as a direct channel to the energy of the jaguar, the most powerful predator in the jungle and a symbol of raw power, stealth, and the ability to move between the visible and invisible worlds. In New Zealand the Maori people call jade pounamu and consider it among the most sacred materials in their culture, passing heirloom jade pieces down through generations as living repositories of ancestral power that accumulate the spiritual energy of every person who has ever worn them. In ancient Egypt red stones were associated with the blood of Isis, the most powerful goddess in the Egyptian pantheon, whose magic was strong enough to resurrect the dead, and wearing them was a way of carrying her sovereign protection on the body.
