Rainbow fluorite is one of the most scientifically extraordinary and mythologically significant minerals on earth, and its story begins with a name. The word fluorite comes directly from the Latin fluere, meaning to flow, given to this stone by the Renaissance mineralogist Georgius Agricola in his foundational 1556 text De Re Metallica, one of the most important documents in the history of mineralogy, because of the way fluorite flows and melts with an ease no other mineral of its hardness possesses. Fluorite is also the mineral that gave science the word fluorescence, because when ultraviolet light strikes certain fluorite specimens they glow with an inner luminosity so extraordinary that early scientists named the entire phenomenon of glowing light after this single stone.
